What are dentures and partial dentures?

You are not the only one if you have lost some or even all of your teeth. Millions of Americans in the United States are missing one or more teeth within their smile. But just because tooth loss is common does not mean it is something you have to accept. Several options are available to help you restore your smile after tooth loss, and dentures and partial dentures are some of the most popular at the practice of Dr. Erik G. Grothouse.

What are dentures?

  • Full dentures. Complete dentures are a type of prosthetic device that replaces all the teeth in a single arch (either the upper or lower). They’re typically made from acrylic and fit snugly over the gums. Some patients keep these in place with natural suction or denture adhesives, while others prefer the placement of dental implants for implant-supported dentures. All of these are options at Erik G. Grothouse, DDS.
  • Partial dentures. Partial dentures are similar, but as the name suggests, they only replace some of the teeth in an arch. Partial dentures are made with a flexible acrylic material that is lightweight, yet allows you to eat hard, crunchy foods. Acrylic clasps of denture material allow the partial to anchor at the gumline for a natural looking smile. These removable partial dentures are easy to care for and can replace one or several teeth, regardless of whether or not they are beside one another.

Which one is right for me?

Both dentures and partial dentures can be extremely helpful in restoring the function and aesthetics of your smile after tooth loss. But before you decide which type of prosthetic is right for you, you should consult a qualified dental professional such as Dr. Grothouse. He can help you in weighing the pros and cons of each option and make sure that you choose the one that’s best for your individual needs.
